REFORM Alliance aims to transform probation and parole by changing laws, systems, and culture to create real pathways to work and wellbeing. Learn more about our goals here
There are an estimated 4.5M people on probation and parole in the United States.
Probation and parole are similar in that they’re both forms of community supervision that are alternatives to incarceration. The biggest difference is that probation is part of a person’s court-ordered sentence, while parole is a conditional release from prison.
Yes, people on probation and parole can go to prison for non-criminal acts like missing curfew, traveling without permission, or losing a job. In fact, an estimated 25% of all prison admissions each year are for technical probation and parole violations
Right now, people under probation or parole make up the majority of the 6.6M people in the U.S. criminal justice system, and costs states approximately $2.5 billion a year, and yet the issue has received relatively little attention. We’re focused on probation and parole because we believe smart, common-sense reforms can make communities safer and save taxpayers money.
At this time, REFORM is not able to advise or assist with individual cases. Instead, we’re advocating for laws and policies that will impact the largest number of people.
REFORM receives its funding from a generous group of supporters that includes philanthropists, business leaders, activists, and corporations. Learn more about some of our donors who make up our Board.
